Kittens! Kira Release! Kittens!

Summary of activity

Momma cat and three kittens arrived from a MADACC to UCC transfer on April 23rd, 2023. On this date, the kittens were 5 days old.

On 12 June Kira had her spay surgery; kits were transferred to HAWS on 13 June. The staff there took over the three kittens care from then on.

Mom's TNR release date was June 19th, 2023.

Mom arrived at MADACC a few days before the kittens were born. She was described as unapproachable.
I was a bit concerned about my ability to obtain kitten weights; would she growl? Slash? Bite?

Well, the first few days my concerns were unwarranted; Kira was not happy to seeme but she allowed me take the kittens from her without bloodshed.

However, after those first few days, she was rather agressive; hissed, growled, slashed and wanted to bite me when I removed the kittens. I tried a long spoon approach, but she swapped at the spoon and either knocked them off the spoon or hit the kitten!

Soooo, I used my very heavy gloves and gently removed the kittens; it was a bit touch and go, as she would always hiss, sometimes slash out, once or twice try to bite...but I was able to obtain daily weights by being very careful, and slow, in my movements.

April 30th, 2023

Kira is not a happy camper; A long spoon does not work, she slaps at it and either hits the kitten(!) or knocks them off the spoon.
It does, however, work great for returning the kittens to momma after the weigh-in.

Thank goodness for thick gloves.

First Days

Home, for the time being

Isn't she adorable?

Eyes wide open!

Mom, Kira still scowling. But...she cannot reach the scowling shelf!

Through May 14th

With Kira, Momma

Kira, Mom cat, is still very unhappy and agressive. I suspect that will never change.
She will be with us for quite a bit, so I can only hope she doesn't get worse!

Through May 26th, 2023

It was touch and go there for a bit with Kes; she was/is our Nano Kitten. Low weight, less energy than Kitt and Kendra for several weeks.
Kes started eating a bit from the spoon (kitten formula) and Churu. Finally, I saw her eating dry food all by herself!
What a relief!

Here they are in the official 'Kitten Transport' vehicle.

You can't really tell here, but Kes is 230g less than her siblings!! When you are just a kitten, that is a lot of weight she needs to pack on.

Kira Release date 19 June 2023.

Sometimes, the best we can do for a feline is ensure they are spay/neutered, and have rabies and other shots to keep them as healthy as possible.

Of course, for Kira, the most important thing was to help her avoid having any more kittens. She was released where she was trapped, and is now, hopefully, living her best life. We released her in the alley of the house she was trapped at; we drove around to the front and met two of her friends:
